Connect with the material and learn the age-old technique of throwing clay on the wheel. Individual sessions, experiences for couples and regular hours packs to improve on the electric wheel.
Working on the wheel is a meditative, expressive and absorbing experience. Sitting at the wheel, you'll learn to match the rhythm of the pedal to the pressure of your hands to bring cylinders, bowls, cups and vases to life.
At our studio on Plaça Rector Ferrer in Olot (la Garrotxa) we have professional, latest-generation electric wheels. We work in groups of no more than 2 people at a time so the guidance is truly close and personal: from body posture and arm position to the delicate touch of water and clay.
We take care of drying, glazing where appropriate and the firings needed to finish the piece. The result is strong, waterproof objects that are 100% food, dishwasher and microwave safe.
The step-by-step path to mastering the wheel from the first session:
We start by preparing the clay to remove air bubbles using the ram's head technique and fixing the ball firmly in the centre of the wheel head.
The foundation of wheel work: with firm pressure from palms and fingers we get the clay spinning in perfect concentric balance.
We open the heart of the clay to set the base and thickness, then carefully raise the walls with gentle, steady pressure from the bottom up.
Once the piece is leather-hard, the base is trimmed and we take care of drying, glazing and the firings needed to finish it.
The wheel experience for couples at Roig de Coure, in Olot, lasts two hours and is for a maximum of 2 people, with the potter beside you the whole time. It costs €50 per adult and includes clay, tools, apron, glazing and both firings. It is one of the things to do as a couple in la Garrotxa that doesn't depend on the weather.
Children can do the wheel experience too, with the teacher beside them. The session lasts two hours, costs €45 and includes the same as the adult one: clay, tools, apron, glazing and firings.
You can enjoy a one-off experience (or gift voucher) of 2 or 3 hours, or buy hours to come to the studio in the morning or afternoon (maximum 3 h per session).
Roig de Coure is at Plaça Rector Ferrer, 15, in the centre of Olot, the capital of la Garrotxa (Girona).
There is free and paid public parking less than three minutes' walk away, such as the Hospital Vell car park or the town-centre car parks.
We open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 20:00. We are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
